1. They are open-minded

When running a company, it’s not always going to agree with everything but cannot afford to close off from other points of view. Listen to opposing views and weigh up the pros and cons. Use this method to analyze and identify areas that could strengthen or weaken the company, and then use gut instinct to come to a sound conclusion.

2. Have a clear vision

Employees see you as a visionary who has dreams and aims high. To achieve them, have clarity about your goals and values, and articulate them clearly. A leader’s purpose is to bring clarity to uncertainty and ambiguity. Leaders create an environment where everyone knows exactly what needs to be done and when it needs to be done. Make sure that you let people know what’s expected of them. Set expectations, define priorities, and provide feedback. If you don’t give people a chance to succeed, they won’t want to try in the first place.

3. Hold themselves accountable

At some point, there’s no escaping accountability. Everyone is responsible for what happens in their part of the business. Leaders set the standards and hold themselves accountable for meeting them. Leaders admit mistakes, apologize, offer solutions, and move on when things go wrong. Even if you don’t feel guilty, your team will. You’ll earn credibility when you show remorse and take full responsibility for failure. Letting your team down hurts and shows weakness, which is why leaders learn to stick up for their teams.

4. Take ownership of problems

Leaders understand that problems are opportunities for improvement. They solve problems quickly and efficiently instead of letting them fester forever. Failing fast is crucial because it helps you avoid paralysis by overthinking whether or not you should act. Don’t wait until after another problem arises before you respond.

5. Show empathy and vulnerability

Empathy and vulnerability are important in any relationship. Empathy allows two people to communicate without speaking. Empathetic leaders focus on the feelings, thoughts, experiences, hopes, memories, aspirations, dreams, wishes, anxieties, concerns, and vulnerabilities of others. Vulnerability means telling people what you think. Sometimes this involves admitting that you made a mistake and showing concern about it. Many leaders become emotional when communicating honestly and openly with their teams. They can connect more effectively with others and motivate them through personal examples.
