Bully breeds are among the most popular dog breeds in the United States. They make up around 20% of the American dog population, which is about 18 million dogs across the United States. Seven of these bully breeds fall into the top 20 spots of the most registered dogs, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). The French bulldog has even recently overtaken the Labrador Retriever as the most registered dog in 2022, which has ended the Lab’s 31 year reign.
These breeds are loved for their kind nature and gentle temperament. Many of these dogs score highly on the ATTS temperament test compared to other breeds. For example, the American bully has the highest temperament score (100%), followed by the bull terrier and dogo argentino (90.9%), and the cane corso (88.7%). Dog owners love the combination of adorable features and even more adorable personalities.
Even though the earliest bully breeds date back to the late 1800s, new breeds are still developing today. The Dogo Argentino was registered in 2020, the Cane Corso in 2010, and the Dogue de Bordeaux in 2008. These registrations are internationally based, including points of origin across Europe, South America, and North America.
