The Importance of COO Coaching

The CEO is widely regarded as the leader of the company, but not without help and support from other employees. However, over 40% of the world’s leading companies also have a COO, many of which double as the second-in-command to the entrepreneur. Regarded as The CEO’s “secret weapon”, the COO helps with a variety of different jobs within the company. The responsibilities of the COO can vary based on factors like CEO needs, company stage, and leadership team strengths.

There are seven different recognized types of COO, respectively labeled the Executor, the Change Agent, the Mentor, the Other Half, the Partner, the Heir Apparent, and the MVP. These different types of COOs all have unique traits that differentiate them, but they all share three consistent attributes: Acuity, organization, and process and structure.

Although true second-in-command/COOs are rare, there has been a recent 16% resurgence of the position that is garnering attention. There are costs to operating with an under qualified COO, or without a COO entirely. Both internal and external challenges have shown a need for the development of this position. It is for these reasons that current trends predict that developing this position with COO coaching will help to improve businesses in a variety of ways.
