What Questions Should I Ask the Dentist About Dental Implants?

If you’re considering getting dental implants, you’ll want to make sure you’re getting the best service possible so that you can be safe and come out with amazing results. When done right, dental implants can drastically change your smile and boost your self-esteem.

When you sign up for a consultation appointment, there are some questions you will want to ask the dentist to make sure that you’re getting the right implants for you. Keep reading for the questions you should ask to make sure you’re getting the most out of your dental implants.

How Long Will the Implants Last?

If taken care of properly, many dental implants can last for up to forty years. Regular care of implants is not too difficult either. Regular dental checkups and daily brushing and flossing can keep your implants in good shape.

Your dentist may not guarantee the longevity of dental implants, but they will make suggestions on how to best care for them. By caring for your implants regularly, you can make the most out of your implants.

Will My Implants Look Obvious?

If you’re worried about whether your implants will stick out, looking obviously fake, you shouldn’t be worried. A good dentist will work to make sure that your dental implants fit into your mouth with a natural appearance. They will do this by matching your dental implants to the color and shape of your other teeth.

How Long Will the Process Take?

After your initial appointment and consultation, the entire process of an implant procedure usually lasts six to seven months.

While different dentists have a different process, it’s good to know the scheduling of your procedure so that you can plan ahead. While some choose to take time off to let the mouth heal, many are able to head back to work the day after surgery.

Typically, at your first appointment, your dentist will fuse the implant and the jawbone. They will then cover it with gum tissue so that it can heal properly. You will be sent home with a temporary bridge or denture so that you are able to chew food and give the appearance that your implants are intact.

At least three months later, you will return to have a post placed into the implant. Then you will be fitted for the correct cap or crown. At least two months later, you’ll return so that your dentist can do the final fitting.

This final part may be completed in either one or two appointments to make sure your fittings are properly adjusted and that your implants match perfectly. This is the common process unless more in-depth surgery is required.
