Pregnancy is full of ups and downs and knowing what’s coming often puts new mothers at ease. As you transition out of the first trimester, your nausea should fade and your energy should start to return (partially at least). Because of this, many women find the second trimester of pregnancy to be the most enjoyable out of the three. While there are a wide variety of pregnancy symptoms during this time, most of them aren’t as drastic as those in the first trimester.
Baby’s Growth
The second trimester is when the baby really starts to grow. Everything from vital organs to teeth to eyebrows will form during this stage, preparing your baby for life outside of your womb. With this growth, your baby also begins to move on its own. On average, this starts anywhere from 18 to 22 weeks, but each baby is different.
It’s common for your baby to shift around and kick during this time period. Some babies are more active than others, and you’ll learn what’s normal for your baby as your pregnancy progresses. The most active times of the day tend to be in the evening and after you’ve eaten. Additionally, your baby will start responding to sounds they hear.
Changes to Your Body
With the continued growth of your baby comes the growth of the uterus as well. The second trimester is when your pregnancy will begin to show. You’ll start to gain weight as your belly grows and makes room for your baby, and your breasts will enlarge as well.
Your fluctuating hormone levels also have a few side effects on your body during this time. Pregnancy glow is a real thing, and your hormones are what cause it. This also increases your sensitivity to the sun (in most people), so be sure to wear sunscreen when leaving the house. Your hormones also increase your hair growth, both in places where hair grows normally and where it’s not normal, like your face and back.
Uncomfortable Side Effects
As your body changes so do the uncomfortable side effects of pregnancy. The most obvious one will be aches and pains throughout your body. As your body makes room for your growing baby, places like your back, lower stomach, and even calves will ache as your body changes. Wear comfortable clothes and try not to get upset with yourself if you’re not able to do what you used to be able to.
It is common for pregnant women to feel faint during their second trimester of pregnancy. This can happen for a variety of reasons including sitting or standing too fast and staying in one place for too long. Make sure you’re eating consistently and drinking plenty of water. Move slowly when you’re sitting or standing to decrease the likelihood of fainting. If you’re consistently feeling faint and unable to manage it, talk to your doctor.
Nipple and/or vaginal discharge is also common during this time. This will be a white fluid. If it is a different color (like red or yellow) or has an odd smell, you should see your doctor right away.
Doctor’s Appointments
Continuous doctor’s appointments are still necessary to monitor the health of you and your baby. The exact discussion in these appointments will vary depending on your medical condition, but your doctor will make sure that your baby is growing at the appropriate speed and that you aren’t experiencing any abnormal pregnancy symptoms. Common things they’ll check include the baby’s heart beat, your blood pressure, and your weight. They may run urine tests or blood tests, if necessary.
