How Long Does Coffee Last?

Coffee is the most popular beverage in the USA and is drunk all around the world on a daily basis. Everyone has their own preferences for what makes a perfect brew and although there are some health concerns about too much caffeine, coffee is good for a wide range of health issues including mental functioning and weight loss. The big question is how long does coffee last?

How long coffee lasts will depend upon the type of coffee you use and its form. It’s important to point out here that there are no real scientific studies into how long coffee lasts but because around 1 billion people drink coffee every day (400 million cups are consumed every day in the U.S.) there is plenty of opinion!

Coffee beans are dry so if they are kept in a sealed packet they can probably last for months or even years. Once the beans have been opened, they will stay fresh for around 3 weeks if you store them in an airtight container and keep them out of the light.

Ground coffee should be kept in an airtight container at room temperature and will last around 2 weeks without any loss of flavor.

Coffee pods are sealed so should stay fresh for months without any loss of taste. Instant coffee can last for years – some people have drunk it after 20 years or so without any health issues.

Coffee is safe to store and to drink for years if necessary and it certainly will not do you any harm. However, if it is too far after its best before date, you will probably notice a loss of flavor.

Brewed Coffee

Brewed coffee tastes best when it is fresh so it’s always a good idea to drink it within 20 minutes or so. If you haven’t added milk or a creamer, you can reheat it and drink it hours later. That said, you shouldn’t drink coffee with milk or creamer after more than a couple of hours if you leave it at room temperature. You can store it in the fridge for a day or so if required.

Cold brew coffee lasts longer

Iced coffee made from decanting fresh coffee and milk into ice cubes and stored in the freezer, is good for a few weeks. So if you like this type of coffee you can prepare it in a batch for added convenience.

Coffee is a safe drink. You can drink stored or out of date coffee without any risk to health as long as it hasn’t been contaminated by mold or damp. It might not taste great but it won’t do you any harm.

Why is coffee so good for you anyway?

Coffee is crammed full of antioxidants and caffeine so as a health drink that perks you up, it certainly works. Research has identified a neuroprotective effect that may help delay issues such as dementia. Coffee is also helpful for weight loss.

Green coffee beans – natural unroasted coffee beans are especially good for weight loss. This is because they are high in a substance called Chlorogenic acid which helps the body burn fat. The only palatable way to enjoy green coffee beans is to take them in supplement form otherwise they are too bitter.
