How Narcissists Destroy The Family Dynamic

Everyone has a little narcissism, however, some people exhibit these traits more than others. When these traits reach an extreme, it is often considered to be narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). This type of personality is defined by self-centered behavior that is usually displayed at the expense of others. Different types of narcissists include grandiose, malignant or dark empath. As many as 1 in 5 people may be considered a dark empath, individuals who score high for dark traits but have above-average emotional intelligence.

In the home, narcissism often manifests itself in the form of poor communication or boundaries, control issues and secret keeping. Not only does this put pressure on any relationships, but it can also lead to long-term effects on children or spouses such as distrust, self-loathing, low self-esteem and addiction.

If someone in one’s life ticks the boxes of narcissistic personality disorder, it may be time to consider an escape plan. With the finances and documents gathered for an escape and careful consideration of life after separation, escape is possible for victims, especially with the help of a family lawyer. Although narcissism is not curable, healing is possible for those suffering from an NPD individual in the home.
