Gut health can be such an embarrassing topic to discuss, from bloating, gas, and constipation, it is not the most glamourous subject to bring up over beers and wings with the boys. It seems as if the health of our stomachs has been set aside as the age of dad bod steps into the forefront, allowing others to make an excuse for the bloat. Overall Health and Improvements

In research to improve my health, I found that the gut plays a significant factor in my overall health. The gastrointestinal system, which is known as our digestive tract, includes our mouth, stomach, pancreas, liver, colon, large intestine, small intestine, and rectum. In our digestive tract, our gut is managed by microorganisms, trillions of them, called microbiota. This bacteria plays many roles in our not only our gut health but in full-body health. Mainly, our gut’s primary function is to absorb the nutrients that we eat, and then it excretes what we do not use, thereby creating waste. I also learned another feature of the gut is the storage of immune cells, which prevent sickness and fights disease. Lastly, our gut helps transmit feel-good neurochemicals that help regulate our moods and play a part in our mental health.

The Role Gut Health Plays

Since our gut plays a significant role in our body’s health, It was important to me to find out what can happen when my stomach is not so healthy? It was vital for me to understand that my gut health affects many areas of my life, including my immune system, the look of my skin, weight gain, my brain’s ability to release serotonin, and my cardiovascular system. What I learned was my gut’s health could be affected by my everyday decisions and environment, for example, high-stress situations, not getting enough sleep, medications, high sugar intake, and processed food. Common symptoms of an unhealthy gut include a persistent upset stomach (diarrhea, bloating and gas), weight gain or weight loss, poor sleep, poor skin (breakouts, and eczema), immune system inflammation, and migraines. It was a shock for me to learn how the gut controlled so many aspects of my life, and that so many of the symptoms I was experiencing were all related to an unhealthy gut.
