Living with hearing loss: Is the Nano X2 Recharge is a game changer?

Hearing loss causes a lot of physical, psychological and social difficulties as it interferes with work, relationships and general communication. Indeed hearing aids like the Nano X2 recharge can help a lot, but it is always helpful to appreciate the context of health problems. It is frustrating and when it happens to you, you will wonder whether it is a temporary problem that can be reversed. In many cases it can be reversed but in other cases it is permanent. We will look at the three main types of hearing loss, i.e. sensorineural, conducive and mixed hearing loss, and the solutions that are available to regain all or part of your hearing.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Sensorial hearing loss is a problem of the inner ear in which nerves or the cilia (hair-like protrusions) have been damaged by trauma, a tumor, Meniere’s disease, autoimmune disease or loud noise.

Repair of nerve and cilia damage is not possible. Depending on how severe the damage is, sensorineural hearing loss can be corrected fully or partially by the use of hearing aids or cochlear implants. A cochlear implant is a device that bypasses the injured or damaged part of the hearing system and stimulates the auditory nerve directly. Most people, even those with severe hearing loss, have been able to partially reverse hearing loss. In some cases, hearing loss is not reversible.

Conducive Hearing Loss

Conducive hearing loss is not as common as sensorineural hearing loss. It is a problem of the outer or middle ear caused by damage to the bones of the middle ear or obstruction of the ear canal that prevents sound from being transmitted to the inner ear. Obstruction may be caused by a foreign object, fluid or infection or a tumor or abnormal growth on one of the tiny bones in the ear or excessive wax. The inner ear and the auditory nerve are not damaged so they still work.

It is possible to partially or fully reverse this type of hearing loss depending on the nature or severity of the problem. However, reversal does not happen for everyone. In case of blockages, hearing can be restored by removing the excessive wax or foreign object noninvasively. Bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics while viruses can be treated with corticosteroids. Abnormal growth can be removed surgically.

Your medical practitioner may be unable to medically restore your hearing if you have abnormalities such as extremely narrow ear canal, thickening of the bone around the ear canal or abnormal bone growth in the middle ear or abnormal separation of the middle ear bones. The doctor may offer a cochlear implant, a traditional hearing aid, a bone-conduction hearing aid, middle ear implants or bone-anchored implantable devices as solutions to the problem.

Mixed Hearing Loss

Mixed hearing loss is a combination of problems in the outer, middle and inner ear. For example, there could be damage to the nerves combined with excessive wax. The doctor will decide on the treatment based on the specific problems. He/she might also decide to treat either the conducive or the sensorineural or both. Generally, the doctor will begin with conducive hearing loss problems then go on to solve the sensorineural problems.
