- Create A Support Group of Sober People
This is very important in recovery, not only because having a social life is necessary, but also because they can help you through the tough times that recovery can bring. An important component of recovery is the ability to connect with people again after so many years of isolation it is a critical component. Whether you choose a 12-step fellowship or a non 12-step alternatives make sure that you have a tribe that will support you on this journey!
- Get a Job
This one is really directed at newly sober people who are just getting out of rehab, but getting a job is very important in early recovery. It gives you a sense of purpose, as well as fills the hours of the day. But not only just a sense of purpose it allows you to rejoin the human race and be a productive member of society.
- “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” – Chinese proverb
- Find What You Love to Do
Many people who are just getting sober have no idea who they are, or what they like to do, so explore different options and find a hobby. It will help to busy your mind and also give you something to do if you get bored. Not only this but finding out what you’re passionate about in life and doing it will change your whole experience in this lie.
- Go to Meetings
If you are involved in a 12 Step Fellowship then go to meeting as often as you can. Not only will this get you out of yourself for an hour, but it also allows you to meet new, sober people. There is a saying “Meeting makers make it” and although this is a bit oversimplified the concept is that meetings are where you can talk about your struggles and your joys they are where you will find support when you need it.
