Staying Fit In The Winter – 5 Tips To Staying Active When It’s Cold Outside

Baby, it’s cold outside, but that doesn’t mean you have to hibernate inside all winter. At the same time, there are occasions when it’s better to stay indoors for your workout. In either case, two factors are key: motivation and safety. So what should you know to help you stay fit and active this winter?

  1. Get familiar with the mall

We’re not suggesting you take a shopping break but a walking spree. Indoor malls offer a safe, climate-controlled environment in which to walk. So power walk past all those stores (don’t stop and spend money!) Remember to wear good walking shoes and don’t overdress. You can carry your winter outerwear in a backpack while you walk!

  1. Cover up

Bitter cold and wind burn can take their toll on your body. To avoid frost bite and damaged skin and to stay warm, be sure to wear gloves, a hat that covers your ears (or a hat with ear muffs over it) and a scarf that you can wrap around your nose and mouth to help warm the air you breathe.

  1. Build a snow fort

Tired of the same old outdoor exercise routine? Exercise can be just plain fun, and building a snow fort or igloo (even if you don’t have kids) can be a great way to get your heart pumping.

  1. Wear sunscreen

Just because it’s cold outsides doesn’t mean you should pack away your SP30. Snow and ice reflect the sun’s rays, so you should wear sunscreen on any exposed skin. That includes your lips, which are highly susceptible to chapping. Be sure to wear lip balm that contains sunscreen.

  1. Buddy up

Exercising outdoors during the winter months with a buddy or a group of people not only provides motivation, it also is a safety feature. A buddy you should always have with you when exercising in winter weather, especially off the beaten path, is a cell phone in a waterproof pouch.

Whether you exercise indoors or out during the cold winter months, you need to make sure you are properly nourished and hydrated.
