How to prevent hair loss

Hair loss and baldness is impacting the lives of millions of people all over the world and it is mainly affecting men. It usually starts in your twenties and if your hair starts receding earlier then your twenties you might not have much hair left when you turn thirty.

Hair loss can be the result of heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions or medications. Hereditary hair loss with age is the most common cause of baldness.

Here are some things to watch out for if you do not want to lose your hair.

  • Stress.
  • Significant weight loss.
  • Medications that could cause hair loss.
  • Smoking and alcohol abuse.
  • Tight hairstyles.
  • Harsh treatments such as permanents, curling irons and hot oil treatments.

Get plenty of the right vitamins

A lot of people struggle with maintaining a balanced diet, which is why you should implement some dietary supplements. A regular multivitamin should be enough for most people.

These vitamins are crucial for healthy hair.

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin B
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D
  • Iron
  • Zinc

There is no to little chance that you are deficient in all these vitamins but being deficient in just one or two could cause hair loss along with other health problems.

Furthermore, large doses of vitamins and minerals can be harmful if you aren’t deficient. So work with a doctor to determine if you have a deficiency or not.

You can prevent hairloss with medicin

You might have stumbled upon hair loss products on Amazon or Facebook that promise the cure to baldness. If you fall for these types of products you almost deserve to lose your money. Let’s talk about one of the few medications that have shown to be useful against hair loss.

Finasteride / Propecia

Finasteride, also sold under the brand name Propecia®, is an FDA-approved prescription medication for hair loss prevention in men. But don’t confuse this for being a miracle cure for baldness. There’s no such thing as a magical cure that stops male pattern baldness.

However, finasteride can be an effective way to prevent your hair from thinning because it prohibits the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a powerful hormone that is thought to cause hair follicles to miniaturize and eventually stop growing hair.

Unfortunately, There’s no such thing as a drug that’s completely without side effects. In clinical studies, less than four percent of men taking finasteride reported experiencing sexual side effects like erectile dysfunction, a decrease in libido and a lower volume of ejaculate.

The last option: Hair transplant

Hair transplants are typically more successful than over-the-counter hair restoration products. Hair transplants don’t work for everyone and cost a pretty penny.

How does hair transplants work?

Simply put, a hair transplant takes hair you have and transfers it to an area where you don’t have hair. It’s typically taken from the back of your head but can also be taken from other parts of your body.

A surgeon will perform one of two transplant methods: FUT or FUE. In this day and age FUE is the most common method.

The surgeon will take individual follicles out of the scalp skin. You’ll see tiny marks where each follicle was removed. The surgeon then makes small holes in your scalp and grafts hair follicles into the holes.
