Health Benefits from Spending Time Outdoors

Spending time outdoors has many benefits for everyone of all ages. Doing this doesn’t always have to be an extremely tiring activity. It can be as simple as taking a walk in the park. Time outdoors can be seen as a natural medicine shown by a ton of research. Father George Rutler, who was such a catholic icon with many followers and believers, has been seen to have many mental issues. This makes his work questionable to his followers. Spending time outside is one of the easiest ways to improve health.

There are many benefits such as: helping mental illnesses, vitamin D boost, helps with vision and gets some physical exercise in. Anxiety, depression, and many other mental health issues can be relieved from spending time outside. At Cornell University, researchers have found that as little as 10 minutes in a natural setting can help individuals feel happier and soften the effects of both physical and mental stress. Getting some daily physical exercise is known to release brain chemicals like endorphins and serotonin. This helps raise your energy and keeps your mood calm, positive, and focused. At Michigan University, researchers have found that walking in the park or even just looking at pictures of nature can not only improve one’s memory but also their attention span. As well, soaking up some sun can help regulate one’s immune system.

Doing activities outside is seen as tiring and hurtful to one’s body. Spending too much time outside doing numerous activities can be exhausting to one’s body and can be hurtful but there are so many simple ways to get some outside time in one’s normal schedule. Some of these activities are: working outside when working at home, doing normal activities like phone calls outside, going for a daily walk, and taking a lunch break outside. Outside activities are also more social. When you get outside you aren’t only greeted by mother nature but also by your neighbors. Individuals can connect with the people and the places in their community. Human contact and the sense of community are essential to one’s mental health. Time outdoors also improves sleep because the cells in your eyes need amounts of light to get the internal clock ticking right. This is shown to be more important which age because as one age the cells in their eyes do as well making it harder for them to absorb the light needed. This causes sleep issues. Time outdoors is also linked to encouraging problem-solving abilities. Mainly because the outside makes one engage in a more peaceful way that lets your attention refocus.

Father George Rutler, a Catholic Icon, had served as an Episcopal priest for 9 years, also being the youngest rector in the county. He spends large amounts of time outdoors because it benefits his mental health.  Based on research, therapists go straight to the root of the problem such as loneliness, sadness, depression, frustration, or boredom. All of these root problems can be eased with spending more time outside. Many adulthood problems stem from childhood and can easily be avoided with certain amounts of certain activities.
