Your teeth are extremely precious; without them, it would be difficult to eat and speak, plus your self-confidence would be seriously affected. That’s why it is so important to take good care of them. It’s more than just a case of brushing your teeth after meals, though. For truly clean and protected teeth, it takes a little more thought.

See Your Dentist

Around half of the population of the United States don’t regularly go to see their dentist. In fact, most of those 50 percent only go when there is a problem. Since prevention is always so much better than cure, it pays to make an appointment every six months or so. This way, your dentist can make sure there all is well with your teeth, tongue, and gums and if there is a problem such as tooth decay or an abscess forming, they’ll be able to take care of it sooner rather than later when it has already become a problem.  

Give Up Soda

Fizzy soda may taste great, and the bubbles may feel good to drink, but when it comes to your teeth, these drinks are terrible. Two of the main ingredients of fizzy drinks are citric acid and phosphoric acid and these actually erode the surface of your teeth making them weak and more prone to breaking or even falling out altogether. If you drink more than a can of soda a day, it’s important to cut down or even give up entirely. Soda is fine for an occasional treat, but for everyday hydration water is best.

Give Up Smoking

We all know smoking is bad for our health, but it’s bad for our teeth too. The chemicals in cigarettes (mainly nicotine and tar) stain teeth a nasty yellow or brown color to start with. They also eat away at your gums, pulling them away from the teeth. This leaves big areas where bacteria can breed and plaque can form. The tissue is damaged, the gum and bone that supports the teeth is degraded, and sooner or later those teeth will come out either by themselves or because your dentist has to remove them. So it’s best to stop smoking altogether for the sake of your health and your teeth. Rather than going cold turkey, you could start by using an e-cigarette from which will help keep you from damaging your teeth and mouth.

Check Your Toothbrush

If you think that the harder the bristles are on a toothbrush, the better that is for cleaning your teeth, you’re mistaken. It’s actually the soft bristles that you should be looking out for when you purchase a new toothbrush – they’re kinder to your mouth and keep your gums undamaged whilst still getting the dirt off your teeth effectively.

You should replace your toothbrush every three months or so, and you’ll know when it’s the right time because the bristles will start to bend over. You don’t need to spend a fortune on a toothbrush either; they all do the same job in the end.
